#4: I Spy...Architectural Details!

Background for the Educator: Now that your students have a basic understanding of the parts of a building and the materials that make them up, it’s time to hit the streets again! This time, have students take a look at finer details of buildings. These may include different features, such as roof window dormers or different types of columns. Why are these details included on different historic buildings? Usually, these features are there to make a building look a certain way. This is a great way to have kids make connections and practice observing (and discussing) what they see in the built environment.
