FAQ

  • How does my donation make a difference?

We are entirely donation-funded, so every dollar makes a world of difference. Your donation helps us keep a protective eye over Burlington's historic buildings, allows us to offer workshops on everything from historic window repair to how to tell Queen Anne and Italianate buildings apart, funds our walking and cemetery tours, and more.

  • How do you choose Preservation Burlington award buildings?

Though we're not a regulatory entity, we're guided by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, which cover everything from materials and finishes to additions and community impact. Evaluating projects can be tricky, so these guidelines are enormously helpful as they remove subjectivity from the process. You can read all about the guidelines here.

  • How do I nominate my house for an award?

Head over to our nomination page, fill out the form, tell us why you think it's a contender, and we'll be in touch!

  • How do I learn the history of my house?

If you're not up to spending hours in the city vault or one of Burlington's special collections libraries, we can help. Apply for a historic marker and we'll do the baseline research for you!

  • I’m new to Burlington…what should I know?

Burlington has a rich historic landscape that includes both National Register-listed historic districts and individually listed buildings. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, tune in to our monthly show on CCTV Channel 17, and get on our mailing list to learn about upcoming events and advocacy issues. And keep coming back here – we're in the process of building out a historic resource section of this website to make learning about Burlington's rich history easier and more accessible!

  • Can you recommend a restorer/tradesperson?

As a volunteer organization we don't have the capacity to vet individual providers or maintain a resource directory, but the City of Burlington lists a few on their website.

  • Do you have any volunteer opportunities?

YES! Whether you're interested in joining our board or volunteering on a committee, we'd love to chat. We are always looking for help putting on programs, leading tours, advocating for threatened historic buildings, and writing for our newsletter. Drop us a note through our contact form, tell us how you'd like to get involved and we'll be in touch!
