Old North End Ramble: Elmwood Cemetery Tour

  • Meet: Elmwood Ave. gate (map)

At Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00, historian Elise Guyette, will visit the graves of some of Burlington’s Black citizens, including those who were Revolutionary War Veterans and some who provided safe harbor to those seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. A few served powerful people as servants and laborers, while others were skilled barbers, cooks, nurses, and homemakers. All were buried in the northern half of the cemetery, which was segregated at the time it was built.

Elise’s research brings to light new facets on a plot more noted for North End notables, such as Frances (Fanny) Allen and John Norton Pomeroy.
