Architectural Toolkit and Walking Tours for Educators

Architectural Toolkit

Geared toward school-age children (ages 8-13/4th-8th grade), this place-based, experiential educational toolkit utilizes Burlington's buildings and neighborhoods to cultivate an appreciation and understanding of historic architecture, as well as how Burlington's built environment has changed over time. Starting with a hands-on exploration of actual historic building materials, this kit builds up students' knowledge of historic house structure and materials, historic architectural styles, and Burlington local history and development. With a strong emphasis on primary source research and the skills of observation and analysis, the kit encourages students to think like historians and historic preservationists in the field.

Integral to the kit is a handy field notebook for each student—easily printed, and includes examples of common architectural styles found in Burlington. The kit also includes building materials, reference and coloring books, a CD (with all handouts, lessons, and the field notebook), and an instructors' manual. The manual contains lessons and activities with easy instructions and background information for instructors. Lessons are tied to Common Core and Vermont Standards. All students, upon completion of the toolkit, will be awarded the title of "Junior Preservationists" from Preservation Burlington. Rent the kit for one to four weeks, depending on your time-frame.
